More Hungarian motorways to require tolls from June – Check before you drive!

Starting 8 June 2025, Hungary will introduce new toll sections on two major motorways, adding to the growing list of paid roads across the country. The changes, recently published in the Magyar Közlöny (the official Hungarian Gazette), mean that parts of the M44 expressway and the M85 motorway will become fully toll-required routes.
Which roads will become toll roads?
According to AutópályaMatrica.hu, the following newly completed stretches will now require valid motorway vignettes (known as matrica in Hungarian):
- M44 expressway between the Pest M44/Kecskemét North junction and the 30-Lakitelek/Tiszakécske junction.
- M85 motorway from the Győr West junction to exit 94 near Sopron, reaching all the way to the Austrian border.
These roads were previously toll-free in parts, but from June 8 onward, drivers must have a valid county vignette or a national toll sticker to use them.
What type of vignette is needed?
For the M44 expressway, drivers may need three different county vignettes since the route crosses multiple counties:
- Bács-Kiskun County
- Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok County
- Békés County
Although a small portion near the Nagykőrösi junction crosses into Pest County, the current rule allowing travel until the first exit with a neighbouring county vignette may cover this section—still, checking this in advance is strongly advised.
