New Henley Passport Index: Hungarian passport soars to new heights, it’s stronger than ever

Good news for Hungarian passport holders: Hungary’s travel document has become even more powerful, according to the latest Henley Passport Index. The country now shares its rank with Australia, the Czech Republic, Malta, and Poland.

Hungarian passport grows stronger in Henley Passport Index

The Henley Passport Index ranks passports based on a simple principle: the number of countries and territories passport holders can visit without needing a visa. The list is compiled using up-to-date and continuously refreshed data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA). Updated monthly, the index currently covers 199 passports and 227 different destinations.

Hungary’s passport was previously ranked eighth but improved by one spot in the July update, reaching seventh place. It now stands alongside countries like the Czech Republic and Poland, as well as Malta and distant Australia. A Hungarian passport now grants visa-free access to 185 countries.

While the ranking might not seem especially high west of the Leitha River—Austria, for instance, is in fourth place—it’s considerably more impressive to the east. Among Hungary’s neighbors, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Croatia are all tied in ninth place with access to 183 destinations, while Romania ranks 13th (177 countries) and Ukraine 29th (147 countries). Serbia trails further behind, in 34th place, with visa-free access to just 138 locations.
