Shocking VIDEOS capture apocalyptic midge invasion at Lake Balaton

Disturbing videos have emerged from around Lake Balaton, showing an unprecedented invasion of non-biting midges (Chironomus balatonicus) so overwhelming that locals say it has become nearly impossible to remain in the area. In some places, entering the water is unbearable, as a thick layer of insects—sometimes as wide as a finger—floats across the lake’s surface. The Balaton Limnological Institute has warned that the situation is set to worsen, with this year’s extreme weather to blame.
Life near Lake Balaton becoming unbearable
Blikk recently reported that conditions in and around Lake Balaton have become almost intolerable due to an outbreak of non-biting midges unlike anything witnessed before. Video footage shows swarms so dense that, at certain times of day, it is nearly impossible to walk or breathe outdoors. Residents describe insects flying straight into mouths, noses, and ears the moment they step outside.
The only saving grace in this otherwise apocalyptic scene is that the midges do not bite. Locals admit that if they did, the region would likely already be abandoned. Even so, many are considering leaving the area altogether.
The problem is not that the insects harm people or the ecosystem, but that their sheer numbers are making everyday life a struggle. Taking a walk with a pram, for instance, is almost impossible, as the swarms cover everything in their path. Meanwhile, midge larvae are accumulating on the lake’s surface in finger-thick layers, deterring locals and visitors alike from swimming. The infestation is also striking a serious blow to the region’s tourism industry.
Heavy blow to local tourism
“From Füred to Boglár, and down to the Ezüstpart in Siófok, the water was covered with dead midges,” one local woman told the paper. “People are horrified at the thought of going into the lake.” She added that she has lived in Balatonföldvár and Siófok all her life, and has never seen anything remotely comparable.

“Since this midge invasion began, I’ve refused to visit,” said another woman who regularly holidays in the area. “I’ve seen the photos and heard the stories from friends—no thank you. We’ve always had midges, but never on this scale.”

Others reported that it is not only the lake and light sources attracting the insects—house walls, street furniture, lawns, even roads and pavements are now blanketed with the tiny arthropods. One resident remarked that many had hoped the swarms would eventually fade, but so far there has been no relief.
The worst Is yet to come: autumn infestation to blanket entire lake
Some locals have also complained about unusually large spiders, which they believe are growing bigger due to the abundance of food.
According to the Balaton Limnological Institute, the explosion in midge numbers is the result of high algae concentrations in the lake combined with exceptionally warm weather. Worse still, scientists warn that the most severe phase has yet to arrive. Midge larvae are now developing evenly across the entire lake, meaning that by September, a full-scale infestation is expected throughout the region. So far, the swarms have been concentrated mainly in the southern part of Siófok Bay.
The institute is calling for immediate, targeted intervention alongside further research and monitoring. Its top recommendation is to reduce the amount of nutrients entering the lake, in order to limit algae growth and curb the proliferation of midges
