Ambulance overturns in Budapest crash, 5 hospitalised

Late Saturday night, a serious accident occurred in Budapest’s 19th district: an ambulance transporting a patient collided with a passenger car at the intersection of Üllői Road and Báthory Street, then overturned. Five people were injured in the crash and taken to the hospital.
Five injured
According to the National Ambulance Service (OMSZ), the ambulance was using its lights and sirens and en route to the hospital when the collision occurred. Among those injured were the patient and their relative, the driver of the passenger car, the ambulance driver, and a paramedic. All were treated at the scene before being transported to the hospital.
According to the disaster management report, the crash also knocked down a utility pole. Authorities are still investigating the circumstances of the accident, and the question of liability remains unresolved.
Another ambulance crash in Budapest within days
This latest incident is especially concerning as it marks the second collision involving a siren-blaring ambulance in Budapest in just three days. According to Index, a few days earlier on Friday, an emergency vehicle crashed with a car under the Flórián Square overpass in District III. In that accident, two people suffered minor injuries and one of the vehicles ended up on its side.
Investigation launched
A statement from OMSZ said that an investigation is launched after every incident to determine exactly what happened and who is responsible. Ambulance officials reminded the public that vehicles using emergency signals must always be given the right of way, as every minute can make the difference between life and death.
