Hungarians in Transcarpathia struggle amid Russia’s war, officials stress need for peace

The situation of Hungarians living in Transcarpathia is getting more difficult day by day, the state secretary for national policy at the Prime Minister’s Office said at an event on Saturday.

Lőrinc Nacsa said at a panel discussion with the leadership of the Transcarpathian Hungarian Cultural Association (KMKSZ) at the Tranzit Festival held in Tihany that the organisation, the Hungarian government and churches are helping the people of Transcarpathia with numerous programmes, but the greatest help for the Hungarians of Transcarpathia — but also for the Russian and Ukrainian people, and indeed for the whole of Europe — would be peace.

Lívia Balogh, the leader of KMKSZ’s group in Uzhhorod (Ungvár), said the war affected every family in Ukraine and Transcarpathia, whether due to conscription, the economic crisis, or the separation of families, “and no one can be left out”.

KMKSZ head László Brenzovics noted that although Transcarpathia is far from the front line, people have to live under extreme stress, and a significant portion of the population has moved abroad.
