Foreign minister of Hungary: The country’s position is not determined from abroad

Foreign minister Péter Szijjártó said on Friday that the Ukrainian president argued in vain that the European Union accession of his country was not opposed by Russia, because the Hungarian government’s position is not determined from abroad.

The ministry cited Szijjártó saying on Facebook that after talks with the head of the European Council, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky again made remarks about Hungary.

“He believes that the Hungarian rejection of Ukraine’s EU membership was incomprehensible because even Russia was not against it. Well, Zelensky once again thinks that his approach applied to everyone else,” Szijjártó said.

“Contrary to him, our position is not determined from abroad. We do not care what they think about Ukraine’s EU membership in Moscow,” he said.

Szijjártó said the Hungarian government was only concerned with the opinion of Hungarian people, and they had made it clear that they do not want Ukraine to be a member of the EU.

“They do not want the Ukrainians to destroy our farmers, our labour market, and our security,” he said.

“So no matter how much Zelensky trusts the Russians, we will not support Ukraine’s EU accession,” he added.

  1. Hungary’s foreign policy has been written in Moscow for years. Ask yourself why Hungary blocked Swedish and Finnish accession to NATO for almost two years and was the final NATO member to approve it. There was absolutely no coherent reason for it except that it benefited Russia. Hungary should be kicked out of NATO and the EU for the good of both organizations.
