EU pursues workaround to keep Ukraine and Moldova accession on track despite Hungary’s veto

The European Union has adopted an unprecedented procedure to ensure Ukraine and Moldova’s accession process continues despite Hungary’s blockade of official negotiations, Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Taras Kachka announced on 13 September.
Work continues despite veto
Ordinarily, accession talks are frozen if a member state exercises its veto — a fate that has stalled progress for several Western Balkan candidates.
In Ukraine’s case, however, the European Commission and member states have agreed that preparatory work, including the drafting of accession benchmarks, will proceed independently. Hungary is still blocking the formal launch of negotiations, the Kyiv Independent reported.
Hungary’s approval still decisive
Legally, accession can only be completed once all member states give their consent, meaning Hungary’s approval remains legally indispensable. Kachka suggested that by the time Budapest shifts its stance, Ukraine could already have met all technical conditions.
Some EU governments are also considering ways to take certain decisions without Hungary’s agreement — a rare and politically sensitive step.
Budapest isolated
Hungary has consistently opposed Ukraine’s EU bid. Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó claimed in August that membership would harm Hungarian farmers, threaten food security, and “open the door to the Ukrainian mafia”.
By June, however, nearly all other EU capitals had endorsed the start of accession talks, acknowledging that Ukraine had met the essential criteria.
Candidate status granted at speed
Ukraine applied for EU membership shortly after Russia’s invasion in 2022 and was granted candidate status within months. Since then, Kyiv has pursued a series of reforms to meet accession requirements.
Several EU leaders, including High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kaja Kallas, have hinted at “Plan B” and “Plan C” options if Hungary maintains its veto indefinitely.

The EU needs members which are loyal to Europe and not to Russia. Best would be for Hungary to leave and Ukraine to join.
The European Union, created to unite, is unraveling under its own weight. Its centralized design and one-size-fits-all euro suffocate diverse nations. Germany in depression, France looking to bail on the IMF Italy and Greece drown in debt, unable to adapt. The euro’s uniform interest rates, kept steady by the ECB at 2% in September 2025 after earlier cuts, exacerbate stagnation, as eurozone GDP growth crawls at just 0.1% in Q2 2025, barely above pre-2019 levels amid persistent post-COVID malaise.
With no shared budget (hello Euro, you are not well-designed, well thanks for that Helmut Kohl und Komplizen, would not let us vote on the Euro, huh?) and veto gridlock, crises like migration (with jails being over filled with next generations immigrants: compare this to the percentage of the population, and you might grasp the problem here) or Ukraine linger unresolved.
Authoritarianism is creeping in. The 2022 Digital Services Act targets “disinformation,” silencing dissenters. Brussels sidesteps national vetoes (like Hungary blocking Ukraine getting fast tracked in the EU) and pushes laws that strip away sovereignty, controlling budgets and rewriting laws. Free speech for citizen striped away. Corruption runs deep: 2022 Qatar bribes, 2025 Huawei scandals, and €2B in shady green deals expose a system where multinationals, Google, Pfizer, Bayer, BlackRock et al., pull the strings, not citizens.
Like Rome before it, the EU’s overreach, fueled by migration waves, war costs, and elite greed, could lead to its collapse. Rome fell in 476 AD from corruption and overextension; the EU risks fragmentation by 2030, as populist movements like the AfD and National Rally surge and trust in Brussels plummets to 47%. Multinationals secure tax havens; you’re stuck with a 20% to 30% VAT hike.
The stakes: Keep the EU and risk a soulless empire that prioritizes corporations over people. Let it fracture, and nations could regain their voices, messy, yes, but free. Rome’s fall birthed Europe’s nations. The EU’s collapse might spark a new dawn. So, ask yourself: Is this union worth your sovereignty? Is it worth the conflict it is looking for to hide the mess they made? Should we let them in power? Or should we change it?
More “EU collapsing” Kremlin inspired disinformation. Consider for example “Greece’s government debt-to-GDP ratio, surged to a peak of over 249% in 2020 before beginning to decline, with a 2024 estimate around 158% and projections for further decreases in the coming years. The debt-to-GDP ratio is expected to fall to approximately 146.6% in 2025 and 140.6% in 2026 due to nominal GDP growth and projected budget surpluses. Greece has actually become somewhat of an economic success story with 2025 GDP growth expected to be 2.3%. The first place to look for corruption is in the Pedofidesz government which has done everything it can to undermine the EU. The EU should never have been set up with each state having veto power which Hungary now shamelessly abuses all to promote Russian interests. The only “New Dawn” Hungary leads to is one of Russian enslavement and is everyone that forgetful to not know what that was like?
Non sense
One of the biggest stories in my 80 years is the killing of charlie kirk and the world reaction to it. The ugliest thing i saw was the EU parliment when asked tostabd and a moment of silence – few stood and others yelled out and hit their desks. Whats this have to do with the EU- the same people stood for george Floyd- a thug resisting arrest. The lie was pushed everywhere – including the EU.
The DHN must be under restiction from the EU and NGOs there be no mention of Charlie Kirk. Pushing another pride mob and awful the goverment is here and must stopped- along with the Tisa being way ahead in poles over and over. Its interesting you never see Soros name mentioned here. But hey its been a week since we had update on Orban’s son in law and how corrupt his family. The EU, who is out to destroy them- the folks in the EU love it, nevermind a large % of MPs are paid by Soros Org – just like many in the US gov are. Soros was also major funding of george floyd rioters of 6 months across the US, no wonder they all stood for george floyd in the EU.
The US is a country with a gun problem and a long history of assassinations. I have seen the hideous video of George Floyd’s suffocation. The officers who murdered him were tried and convicted in a court of law so your post is complete disinformation. The Soros myth was created by two Republican poltical stratagists Arthur Finklestein and George Birnbaum in 2010-11 to create an enemy for Fidesz to use to rally nationalist support. It appeals to people who don’t know better and are easily manipulated. There is no “Soros network” pulling the strings of the world but there is a “Fidesz network” manipulating the Hungarian public with this kind of disinformation and some of them blog right here in Daily News Hungary.
What is absolutely ironic is that the Fidesz government which constantly talks about fighting foreign political influence actually relied on foreign influence with these Republican strategists to get into and maintain power. No one in Fidesz will ever talk about it because admitting it would be political damaging.

To GollumPolakLarry: sad person in this clip anyway. https://americans-united.us/john-cleese-extremism.php
So laughable, uneducated. Historically dumb. A true person to avoid when he would get into power. Seeing his messaging, that is not a person we should ever give power to. There we got human nature at its rawest form. But luckily he is just a writing ghost expressing his unfounded frustrations all over and all over again.
Just forget broader eurozone issues like France’s debt and Germany’s stagnation.
Your inflammatory “Pedofidesz” jab and selective optimism weaken your credibility against what is out there.
EU’s gonna ‘save us all’? Sure, tell that to France’s 114% debt-to-GDP and Germany’s zero growth in 2025. Greece’s 2.3% GDP bump doesn’t erase its 140%+ debt or the euro’s one-size-fits-all chokehold. Your pensions? Good luck with France’s deficit and Italy’s creaking funds. Hungary’s vetoes aren’t Russian puppets: they’re a nation saying no to Brussels’ overreach. Keep swallowing the ‘Kremlin disinformation’ line while BlackRock and Huawei cash in on EU’s shady deals. Invest your last bucks in that ‘union’? Be my guest Gollum, follow your preciousss. Nassty.
Well said
Why did the “Pedofidesz” name come about? – Novak, Judit Varga, and now the latest scandal published in Daily News Hungary about powerful members of the government taking boys and girls from group homes for “orgies”. These people are so disgusting it is difficult to read what they have been doing. If there is a God hopefully not only these abusers of children will be punished but also their enablers inside Fidesz and those Fidesz defenders who try to whitewash their crimes. This government stinks from top to bottom. The German government considers Hungary to be a security risk to Europe. Fidesz is now a threat to Polish defence from Russian attack because it has the ability to veto any NATO decision for example to shoot down drones before they enter Polish airspace. These traitors have the ability to tie the hands of NATO in ways that allow Russia to pose a greater threat to European front-line countries. NATO members conduct many discussions outside of the formal body to avoid allowing Hungary to relay sensitive information to the Kremlin. It’s that bad. If the government does not change in April Hungary will need to be completely kicked out of NATO decision making .
