Hungarian county tops the region in both the number and quality of thermal wells and spas
When it comes to thermal waters, Hungary enjoys well-deserved global recognition, with few European countries able to boast as many medicinal and thermal springs. In Western Hungary, there is a clear frontrunner: Vas County, which surpasses all other regions in the number and quality of thermal wells.
19 thermal wells – an unrivalled advantage
According to official records, Vas County is home to a total of 19 wells designated as medicinal water sources. This places the county ahead of Zala, which is also rich in medicinal springs but currently has only 18 listed. Previously, both counties had the same number of certified wells, but Vas has since taken the lead.
Sárvár boasts the highest number of medicinal wells, with eight located within the town. Several of these form the backbone of the area’s health tourism. The other major hub is Bük/Bükfürdő, where six wells have been documented. Szombathely has two, while Celldömölk, Mesteri and Szeleste each have one available to residents and visitors alike.

Not all thermal waters receive official medicinal status
Interestingly, several towns in Vas County have excellent-quality thermal water yet do not hold an official medicinal designation. One such example is Borgáta, where locals are well aware of the water’s beneficial effects, though it has not been officially certified.
Sárvár also features the historic Rábasömjén well. This source once provided the water used to produce the renowned Sárvári Thermal Crystal. Although no longer in use, it remains a reminder that the region’s healing waters have a heritage spanning decades.
Sárvár: one of Europe’s most remarkable medicinal spas
Among Hungary’s globally renowned healing waters, the Sárvár Spa and Wellness Centre, located in Western Hungary, stands out. This compound was administered medicinally to treat digestive issues and was considered rare in Hungary at the time.

The spa has gained international recognition, becoming a member of the Royal Spas of Europe association, which includes only the finest spa destinations on the continent. This prestigious status confirms that the Sárvár complex is of exceptional quality by European standards.
Hundreds of thousands visitors annually
Sárvár Spa welcomes hundreds of thousands of guests each year. In addition to Hungarians, a large number of visitors arrive from abroad, especially from Austria and Germany. Over the past decades, a robust hotel and wellness infrastructure has been built around the spa, earning Sárvár the title of the wellness capital of Western Hungary.
