New buses to serve passengers in Budapest from tomorrow – updated

From Wednesday onwards, the brand-new maximidi Mercedes buses will begin operating, initially on route 121 in Újpest, followed by service on route 27, announced Gergely Karácsony, the Mayor of Budapest, on his Facebook page on Tuesday.
He highlighted that these new buses are environmentally friendly, fully accessible, spacious, and comfortable, and even come equipped with phone chargers.
According to his post, 65 new vehicles will arrive over the coming months, renewing eight percent of BKV’s bus fleet.
The mayor emphasised: “Despite every attempt by the government to drain resources, we are resolute in refusing to give up on improving public transport. We continue to work towards a greener, more liveable Budapest.”

Update: the first vehicles have entered service
The first vehicles of the new maximidi bus fleet (Mercedes-Benz Citaro K) have entered service in the capital, announced jointly by BKV Zrt. and the Budapest Transport Centre on Wednesday through a statement to MTI.
According to the statement, by the end of the first quarter of 2026, 65 maximidi-type buses will be available to passengers. The initial buses are operating on the Újpest 121 route, and soon they will also be seen on the Gellért Hill 27 line.
They explained that BKV’s new Mercedes-Benz Citaro K buses come equipped to meet modern expectations, featuring an ergonomic passenger interior, onboard cameras, and an advanced passenger information system that even displays transfer connections. Additionally, passengers’ comfort is enhanced by USB charging ports located by the seats.
These low-floor, air-conditioned buses are designed to be accessible, allowing passengers with prams and those with reduced mobility to travel with ease.
Both exterior and interior lighting utilise energy-efficient LEDs, while the modern, 7.7-litre BlueTEC EURO VI-E engine ensures low average fuel consumption and therefore reduces environmental impact.
They also noted that these 10.6-metre-long vehicles, which are highly manoeuvrable, belong to the maximidi category and provide comfortable and eco-friendly transport on city routes with lighter traffic and narrower streets.
