Speeding human smuggler caused fatal accident near Budapest: charges brought – video, photos

The Prosecutor’s Office of Budapest’s 6th and 7th district has brought charges against a 23-year-old Moldovan man, accusing him of causing an accident on a highway on the outskirts of Budapest which killed two people, the Metropolitan Prosecutor’s Office said on Wednesday.

According to the charges, the man was driving a five-seater car on the outskirts of Budapest on 18th April 2024, with 112-115km/h at a 70km/h sign. The car contained 9 passengers, some in the trunk, 8 of whom were illegal entrants from Nepal. The Moldovan national was trying to smuggle them to Portugal, the statement said.

The car drifted into oncoming traffic and hit another car, both passengers of which died onsite. Then hit another car causing light injuries to the passengers, and slammed into the guardrail with ca. 85km/h, the prosecutor’s office said according to the Hungarian News Agency.
He may remain in prison for long
The driver fled the scene without ascertaining whether anyone needed help, the charges said.

Police identified and detained him last November, the statement said.
He was charged with reckless behaviour causing a fatal road accident, aggravated people smuggling, and with failing to provide aid at the scene of the accident he caused.
The prosecutor’s office has asked for a prison sentence, expulsion from Hungary and a temporary ban from driving on public roads.
