Malaysian national caught smuggling drugs at Budapest Airport

A 34-year-old Malaysian man has been charged after allegedly attempting to smuggle 19 kilograms of marijuana into Germany via Hungary, according to the Metropolitan Chief Prosecutor’s Office in Budapest.
Prosecutors told MTI that the man had agreed to transport the drugs from Thailand to Europe. On 6 November 2024, he flew from Malaysia to Bangkok, where he collected nearly 19 kilograms of marijuana concealed inside a suitcase.
An accomplice, whose identity remains unknown, is said to have paid for his flights, train tickets and hotel stay in Budapest in an effort to mislead the Hungarian authorities. The accomplice also provided him with spending money.
Malaysian perpetrator faces prison sentence
According to the statement, the accused travelled via Dubai to Budapest’s Liszt Ferenc International Airport, arriving on 9 November 2024, with Munich listed as his final destination.
Customs officers reportedly carried out a detailed inspection of his luggage and discovered the drugs hidden inside, leading to his arrest.
The Metropolitan Chief Prosecutor’s Office said the man has been charged with possession of a particularly large quantity of narcotics. Prosecutors are seeking a custodial sentence and his expulsion from Hungary.
