Heavy snowfall in Hungary causes disruptions across regions and cuts off multiple settlements

Saturday’s intense snowfall caused major disruptions across western Hungary, leaving several settlements inaccessible, closing roads, and prompting firefighters to assist stranded vehicles. In many areas, more than 10–15 centimetres of snow fell, significantly hindering transport.

Snowfall leaves several settlements inaccessible by bus

According to the MÁV Group, multiple settlements in four counties – Baranya, Somogy, Veszprém, and Zala – were already unreachable by bus on Saturday evening due to deteriorating road conditions. In Baranya, Liget became inaccessible; in Somogy, Kaposdada and Zsippó; while in Veszprém County, Bakonybél, Hidegkút, Jásd, Kislőd, Lókút, Öcs, and Tés could no longer be reached, Hungarian News Agency MTI reported.

The situation was particularly severe in Zala County. Bagod, Becsvölgye, Csapi, Kustánszeg, Milejszeg, Nemeshetés, Nemespátró, Vaspör, Zalacséb, Zalaháshágy, and Zalaújlak all became unreachable by regional bus services. In several districts of Zalaegerszeg – including Szenterzsébethegy, Bazita, and Ebergény – local bus services also came to a halt.

Disruptions in the Bakony Mountains: Firefighters assist stranded vehicles

Transport conditions worsened across the Bakony Mountains due to several accidents, stuck vehicles, and road closures. According to the Veszprém County disaster management authority:

  • a lorry became stuck on Main Road 8 near Városlőd, blocking multiple lanes,
  • cars were stranded between Zirc and Borzavár,
  • a car slid into a ditch between Tapolca and Sümeg,
  • a vehicle with a trailer jackknifed on Road 77 near Tótvázsony,
  • firefighters had to assist two buses and a passenger car between Balatonszőlős and Tótvázsony.

Police temporarily closed the steep section near Városlőd to recover the lorry, and several vehicles also became stuck on the Várpalota–Tés road.

Numerous accidents reported nationwide

Other parts of western Hungary also saw accidents, including collisions involving passenger cars on Main Road 11 near Esztergom and on Main Road 7 at Galambok. Authorities once again urged motorists to

set off only if absolutely necessary, and only with vehicles equipped with winter tyres.

More snow and blowing snow could further disrupt travel

According to the meteorological service, cloud cover will gradually decrease over Transdanubia, and the sky may clear in many areas by the evening. In the east, however, conditions will remain overcast, with light snowfall or flurries possible in the north-eastern counties.

Weak blowing snow is also expected in parts of North Transdanubia until midday. Daytime temperatures will range between -2 and +4°C, dropping to below -5°C late at night in clear, snow-covered areas.

Warning: Check conditions before travelling

Authorities are asking drivers and travellers to:

  • check current road conditions before setting off,
  • ensure vehicles are equipped with proper winter tyres,
  • travel only when absolutely necessary.

Further disruptions are expected in the coming hours, particularly in western Hungary and the Bakony region.
