Major milestone date set for the Russian expansion project at Paks NPP

The decisive moment will take place on February 5, the pouring of the first concrete, which will make this investment irreversible in a physical sense, state secretary Levente Magyar said on Tuesday in Paks where work is in progress on the upgrade of the local nuclear power plant.
Magyar said the so-called assembly concrete layer will be poured to create an even, clean, uniform surface for further construction. Work will begin in February, “from then, there is no turning back, this power plant will be built according to the schedule and our obligations,” he said.

He noted that the international environment has not been favourable to Russian-Western cooperation in recent years, to put it mildly. The Paks II project is however truly international, in which, in addition to the Russian general contractor, American, French, German, and even Australian companies are participating.

“In Hungary it is nuclear power plants that can produce large amounts of energy safely, cheaply, and in a climate-neutral manner,” the state secretary said.
