Fastest rise in Hungarian car history? Chinese manufacturer becomes electric vehicle market leader in 2025!

Just two years after entering the Hungarian market, Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD has surged to the top, becoming the country’s number one brand in the New Energy Vehicle (NEV) segment in 2025. With total passenger car sales of 2,412 units, BYD now leads both battery electric (BEV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) categories, marking a remarkable rise from its fourth-place finish in 2024.
BYD has become the number one brand in the New Energy Vehicle (NEV) passenger car segment in Hungary in 2025, based on total sales figures from the Datahouse database. The category includes both battery electric vehicles (BEV) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV). BYD achieved total passenger car sales of 2,412 units, taking the top position in the ranking.
This milestone marks a significant step forward for the brand. In 2024 – the first full year of BYD’s presence on the Hungarian passenger car market – the brand finished fourth in this ranking. Just one year later, BYD has moved to the very top of the NEV passenger car segment.
The brand’s momentum accelerated further in the last quarter of the year, delivering an exceptional performance. Strong December sales results propelled BYD to 6th place on the total passenger car market, achieving a 4.35% overall market share – a clear sign of growing mainstream acceptance beyond the electrified segments.

BYD also finished number one in the BEV passenger car and light commercial vehicle (LCV) market. Sales of purely electric BYD passenger vehicles, together with the highly popular BYD ETP3 light commercial vehicle, reached a total of 1,858 BEV units.
The strength and breadth of BYD’s model range is further reflected in the list of the Top 10 most popular BEV electric cars in Hungary, where four BYD models are represented. The BYD ATTO 3 leads the ranking with 333 units, closely followed by the BYD SEALION 7 with 332 registrations.
The performance-focused BYD SEAL sedan achieved 294 units, while the BYD DOLPHIN SURF, launched only in May, still made it into the top ten with 252 units. In addition, the DOLPHIN SURF secured the number one position in the B-segment electric car category, underlining its strong appeal in the urban EV market.
On the first days of January, BYD also published its global 2025 delivery figures, confirming the brand’s position as the world’s number one player in the NEV segment, and simultaneously the number one global brand in the BEV passenger car segment. Hungary follows this global trend: a brand that entered the Hungarian market only at the end of 2023 is now leading the segments in which it operates.

BYD made a strategic decision to end the production of internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles in 2022, focusing exclusively on advanced BEV and Super DM plug-in hybrid models, all built around the innovative Blade Battery technology.
The brand’s growth in Hungary continues at a strong pace. BYD’s local network has expanded significantly and now includes 12 sales locations and 7 service centres nationwide, with two additional countryside sales points currently under development. This expansion makes electric mobility more accessible for new customers while ensuring reliable service and after-sales support for the growing BYD customer base in Hungary.
