The Handke Project comes to Hungary with English-language performance

An internationally acclaimed theatre production, The Handke Project Hungary, will be staged in the lakeside village of Bánk in February, bringing contemporary European political theatre to a Hungarian audience in an accessible, English-language format.
The performance, written by Jeton Neziraj and directed by Blerta Neziraj, will take place on Saturday, 21 February 2026 at 6:00 PM at the METTRIN Arts Center (METTRIN Rendezvény- és Művészeti Központ) in Bánk, northern Hungary.
The Handke Project Hungary and its international background
The Handke Project Hungary is a bold and satirical theatrical work that critically examines the moral and political controversies surrounding celebrated European writer Peter Handke.
Through irony, confrontation and dark humour, the production raises broader questions about artistic responsibility, historical memory and the limits of cultural prestige.
The performance is the result of an extensive international co-production involving theatres and cultural institutions from Kosovo, Italy, Germany, and Bosnia and Herzegovina, highlighting the project’s strong European dimension.
For foreign readers, it is worth noting that such international co-productions are increasingly common in Central Europe, allowing Hungarian audiences outside Budapest to experience major European theatre works without travelling abroad.

English-language performance with Hungarian subtitles
The production will be performed entirely in English, with Hungarian subtitles provided, making the event accessible both to international visitors and local audiences.
The international cast includes actors from France, Italy, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Kosovo, and beyond, reinforcing the cross-border character of The Handke Project Hungary.
In case you missed it, Budapest is one of the top 3 cities of Europe for filming, according to a new list, created by experts, for experts.
Venue: METTRIN Arts Center in Bánk
The event will be hosted at the METTRIN Arts Center in Bánk (address: 2653 Bánk, Tóparti sétány 2), a cultural venue known for combining contemporary arts with a scenic lakeside setting. Bánk is located roughly 60 kilometres north of Budapest and is easily reachable by car.
The performance is supported by the Embassy of the Republic of Kosovo in Hungary and local cultural partners, underlining the diplomatic and cultural significance of the event.
Why The Handke Project Hungary matters
By staging The Handke Project Hungary outside the capital, the organisers aim to broaden access to challenging contemporary theatre and foster international cultural dialogue in regional Hungary.
The production offers not only artistic value but also an opportunity for audiences to engage with pressing ethical and political questions through the medium of theatre.
Further details about tickets and the venue are available on the organiser’s official websites.
