Budapest’s dazzling winter jewellery exhibition

jewellery exhibition in Budapest Hungary

An exhibition entitled “Shine! – The Time of Jewellery” opened at the Hungarian National Museum, which attracted many visitors.

Jewellery exhibition in Budapest

The exhibition presents the most exceptional pieces from the museum’s jewellery collection, as well as contemporary jewellery by art collector Katalin Spengler and former and current students and lecturers of the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design, the press release says. The exhibition spans 40,000 years, from Hun-Aryan, medieval and Baroque works to contemporary Hungarian jewellery design. The Hungarian press hailed Shine! The Time of Jewellery as the most beautiful Advent exhibition in 2024, and its popularity is proven by the fact that less than three months after its opening, the 30,000th visitor arrived, and the museum presented them with a gift.” – said Dr. Gábor Zsigmond, Director General of the Hungarian National Museum.

The world-class collection of jewellery includes objects such as the poison ring of King Béla III, the 900-year-old ring of Kálmán Könyves and the mourning jewellery of Hungarian women who were concerned for the fate of the nation after the 1848-49 War of Independence, who stood up for the homeland and mourned the martyrs of Arad even 10 years later. In addition to the unique treasures of the Carpathian Basin, the exhibition also features contemporary jewellery art, represented by pieces from Katalin Spengler’s collection, which is renowned throughout Europe, and by the works of students and teachers from MOME – Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design.

The jewellery exhibition is also enriched by the ever-changing content of the National Museum building, making it worth returning to several times. Katalin Spengler’s jewellery, among others, is housed in the museum’s magnificent staircase island. The “contemporary jewellery island”, which opened at the same time as the exhibition, was reorganised at the end of December with a new concept: contemporary jewellery is now about structure, structures, harmony, rhythm and sequences.

On 17 December, a new pop-up exhibition entitled On Boundaries – Jewellery at the Intersections of Man, Nature and the Built Environment was added to the exhibition in the Dome Room, featuring works by current and former students and teachers of MOME.

Coming months

In the coming months, the jewellery exhibition will be accompanied by a series of exciting accompanying programmes, museum education activities and workshops, and the 3000-year-old Somló necklace will remain on display in the Széchényi Room of the Museum.

The good news is that the museum has extended the exhibition until 13 April, 2025.

On May 10, the Eiffel Art Studios will host an evening for lovers of jazz, funk, and groove. Polish bassist Kinga Glyk, whose videos have set viewership records, will perform. Her latest album was produced by five-time Grammy-winner Michael League, with Grammy-winning engineer Nic Hard.

Nduduzo Makhathini’s works bring together jazz and Zulu cultural heritage. His debut album Modes of Communication: Letters from the Underworlds under Blue Note was named one of The New York Times’ “Best Jazz Albums of 2020,” followed by In the Spirit of Ntu in 2022 and uNomkhubulwane in 2024.

In 1993, three Swedish musicians—Esbjörn Svensson, Dan Berglund, and Magnus Öström—formed the e.s.t. trio. Little did they know it would become one of the most influential bands in European jazz of the 1980s. To mark e.s.t.’s 30th anniversary, Magnus Öström and Dan Berglund, along with fellow musicians Joel Lyssarides, Magnus Lindgren, Verneri Pohjola, and Ulf Wakenius, have performed two grand concerts in Cologne and Stockholm. On May 12, they will perform at the Erkel Theatre. The next day, Antonio Farao, one of Italy’s most distinguished jazz pianists and composers, will join forces with John Patitucci, a contemporary jazz bass icon, and drummer Gene Jackson, who has collaborated with Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, and Dave Holland since the 1980s. Together, they promise an unforgettable trio performance.

Jazzfest Budapest: gala dinner

The festival will conclude on May 14 with Mihály Dresch’s gala evening, offering a glimpse into the life’s work of this iconic artist. In addition to performances by his active ensembles—Dresch Quartet, Dresch Alternative Quartet, and Dresch String Quartet—special guests and unique musical collaborations are in store for the audience.

Time Out Market: Budapest to host Central and Eastern Europe’s most outstanding gastronomy market in 2025

Time Out Market

Imagine a bustling hub where world-class cuisine meets local flavour, all under one historic roof. In the second half of 2025, Budapest’s iconic Blaha Lujza Square will welcome Time Out Market, the first gastro-market of its kind in Central and Eastern Europe. Set within the beautifully restored Corvin Palace, this vibrant space promises to blend the city’s rich culinary heritage with global gastronomic trends, offering a dining experience like no other. It would be a shame to miss out on this…

From magazine to a vibrant gastro-market

As Helló Magyar writes, Time Out Market is a gastronomic destination that combines international standards with a focus on local specialities. Featuring stalls from the city’s best and most popular restaurants and chefs, it offers an unrivalled culinary experience. The concept debuted in Lisbon, where visitors can enjoy everything from simple local dishes to creations by Michelin-starred chefs—all at affordable prices. For over 50 years, Time Out has been curating the best a city has to offer, from culture and nightlife to food and drink. Now, this curatorial expertise has taken shape in Time Out Market, a space designed to showcase the very best of the city under one roof, all with the trusted endorsement of Time Out.

Time Out Markets around the world

The Time Out Market concept has expanded far beyond its original home, with similar gastronomic markets thriving in major cities across multiple continents. In the Americas, you’ll find them in Montreal, Boston, New York, and Chicago; in Africa, in Cape Town; in the Middle East, in Bahrain and Dubai; and in Europe, in Barcelona and Porto. The idea remains consistent wherever it lands: the best local chefs and restaurants occupy the stalls, selected through a rigorous screening process, with the lineup refreshed every few years.

Culinary experience in Budapest

These markets cater to both locals and tourists. Locals can enjoy dishes from their favourite spots in a lively setting, with the bonus that groups of friends aren’t limited to choosing just one type of cuisine. Tourists, meanwhile, can dive into the local culinary scene in the most accessible way. A similar experience is coming to Budapest, where a former dancefloor will transform into a vibrant space filled with food stalls and communal tables featuring top local eateries. While Time Out Market Budapest is set to open in the second half of 2025, the list of participating restaurants remains under wraps.

However, Time Out has revealed that the market will feature 14 kitchens showcasing award-winning chefs, local culinary favourites, and up-and-coming restaurateurs. Alongside the food, visitors can enjoy drinks from four bars, including innovative cocktails crafted by local mixologists, all in a space designed to accommodate 800 guests. With an event area and a menu reflecting Budapest’s rich and diverse food scene, Time Out Market Budapest promises to become a culinary and cultural hotspot when it opens next year.

Danube Startup Summit: Empowering the Next Generation of  Young Entrepreneurs

Danube Startup Summit is an event for young people to hear valuable insights from successful people.

Innovation in Eastern Europe is undoubtedly struggling. Think of the brands changing our lives: huge businesses such as Apple, Meta, Windows, and Nvidia are all based in the United States,  with little to none of this caliber based in Eastern Europe. A particularly startling statistic shows this economic discrepancy between unicorn companies per population in the U.S. as opposed to Europe and Eastern Europe. The term “unicorn company” refers to a privately owned startup valued at over US$1 billion, and currently, there are 712 based in the United States for a population of almost 350 million, while in the entirety of Europe, there are 202 for a population of nearly 750 million. Therefore, there are more than ten times as many unicorn companies per capita in the United States than there are in Europe, and even more staggeringly, for a population of nearly 300 million, there are only approximately 15 in Eastern Europe, almost 100  times less. Think of all the innovation, economic growth, and quality of life we miss out on due to stumped business growth and development.

We believe that the root of this cause can be majorly attributed to culture. The mere existence of places such as Silicon Valley or New York prove the effort and resources nations such as  America put into developing startups, locating new ideas, and providing investment, something sorely needed in Hungary and Eastern Europe alike. Jared Schrieber, co-founder of an American Unicorn tech startup from which he made a successful exit, Hungarian superangel, and a speaker at our upcoming event, said it best: “If I had started my business in Hungary, I would have failed right out the gate.” He expands by saying that in order for a Startup to grow into a unicorn, a symbiotic dance of dozens of key components must work in harmony. Great lawyers, investors, and partners are essential, just to name a few. The Danube Summit aims to help create this very ecosystem, specifically addressing the capture and mentorship of young talent, catapulting Eastern Europe into a competitive, valuable startup landmark.

On January 18th, 2025 our first event will take place at Engame Academy, featuring speakers such as Jared Schrieber, a Californian tech entrepreneur; Nagy György, one of the wealthiest Hungarian entrepreneurs and founder of the Wallis group; and Daniel Balla, CPO  and co-founder of Bitrise, Hungary’s very own unicorn company. Our amazing speakers give direct opportunities for mentorship and general advice and will share their difficulties and experiences in regards to successful entrepreneurship. Our attendees will also get the chance to meet amazing like-minded young entrepreneurs and build connections. If that weren’t enough, the event is free and is exclusive for anyone aged 21 and under, and we welcome all attendees with complimentary drinks and food. Let’s make our dreams into reality, and let’s help each other do so.

The Danube Startup Summit is funded by George Mason University and partnered with the Global Young Entrepreneur Society (GYES) and Daily News Hungary. Our founders are Ferenc Deli Szilágyi (fszilagyi@danubesummit.org) (18), Dániel Gerlei (dgerlei@danubesummit.org) (17) and Filip Cerny (18) (fcerny@danubesummit.org).

Great news: Budapest’s beloved LEGO tram extends its stay

Thanks to the great popularity of the tram, the LEGO tram will stay in the centre of Budapest until 6 January, dressed up for Christmas.

The holidays are the busiest and busiest time of the year for most Hungarian families, so the BKV, BKK, Budapest Brand and LEGO team decided to keep the LEGO tram on Deák Ferenc Square for the entire festive period, until the Epiphany.

As we wrote earlier, LEGO Vili, the life-size toy tram is the world’s largest LEGO construction moving on a knitted track, and now everyone can decorate it with their own bricks. With LEGO Vili, the organisers want to raise awareness of the importance of play as a key learning tool and an important part of children’s development, alongside public transport. Guns N’ Roses to return to Budapest with a summer concert in 2025

Legendary rock band Guns N’ Roses will revisit Budapest as part of their world tour next year, according to the event organisers, Live Nation.

A world tour with iconic stops

The 2025 world tour will see Guns N’ Roses performing as headliners at major stadiums and festivals across Europe and the Middle East from May to late July. The tour kicks off on May 23 and spans 24 days, with stops in countries including Saudi Arabia, Georgia, Luxembourg, Bulgaria, Serbia, Turkey, Portugal, Spain, Italy, the Czech Republic, Germany, the UK, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Lithuania, Poland, Hungary, and Austria.

Public Enemy will open select concerts, including Budapest. Other supporting acts during the tour include Rival Sons and the reformed Sex Pistols with Frank Carter.

Budapest and Guns N’ Roses: A rich history

This will mark the fourth time Guns N’ Roses performs in Hungary. The band first played in Budapest during their peak in May 1992 at the Népstadion, sharing the stage with Soundgarden and Faith No More. They returned 14 years later in 2006, performing at the Papp László Budapest Sportaréna, although the concert became infamous for starting two and a half hours late.

Last year, after a 17-year gap, Guns N’ Roses performed at the Puskás Aréna, with all standing tickets selling out within minutes.

The legacy of Guns N’ Roses

Formed in 1985, Guns N’ Roses has sold over 100 million albums worldwide. The band’s original lineup worked together until the mid-1990s, after which frontman Axl Rose continued the group. In 2016, guitarist Slash and bassist Duff McKagan rejoined, reuniting the core of the classic lineup.

The band’s albums from 1987 to 1993, including Appetite for Destruction, GN’R Lies, Use Your Illusion I & II, and The Spaghetti Incident?, were massive hits. Their debut album, Appetite for Destruction, remains the best-selling debut album in U.S. history. At one point, the two volumes of Use Your Illusion simultaneously held the top two spots on the U.S. album charts.

The music video for their iconic song “November Rain” has surpassed 2 billion views on YouTube, and the band averages 24 million monthly listeners on Spotify.

Save the date

Rock fans in Budapest won’t want to miss the chance to see Guns N’ Roses live once more. With their explosive performances and legendary status, the concert promises to be one of the highlights of the summer music season.

15 July 2025 – Puskás Aréna, Budapest – Guns N’ Roses

First ticket access will be available to registered Live Nation members on 12 December from 9 AM.
Full ticket sales will go live on 13 December at 9 AM.
