1. Columbo statue
One of Budapest’s most popular modern statues depicts Lieutenant Columbo, the famously dishevelled Los Angeles homicide detective played by American actor Peter Falk. The life-sized bronze figure is accompanied by Columbo’s equally recognisable basset hound.
The statue stands on Falk Miksa Street, which led to speculation that Peter Falk might have been related to the Hungarian politician and journalist Miksa Falk. Although the actor had Hungarian ancestry, no family connection between the two men has been established.

2. Ronald Reagan statue
Ronald Reagan appears to stride across Liberty Square in a larger-than-life bronze statue unveiled in 2011. Hungary honours the 40th president of the United States for his contribution to ending the Cold War and weakening communist rule in Central and Eastern Europe.
Visitors can photograph Reagan with the Hungarian Parliament visible behind him. The statue is also only a few minutes’ walk from several other American connections in Budapest.

3. George H. W. Bush statue
Another former US president commemorated on Liberty Square is George H. W. Bush. The statue recalls his support for Hungary’s democratic transition and his historic visit to Budapest in July 1989, shortly before the collapse of communist rule.
Bush famously addressed a crowd in rainy weather at Kossuth Square, where he reportedly abandoned his prepared speech after it became soaked.

4. George Washington statue
Budapest has honoured the first president of the United States for more than a century. George Washington’s statue was unveiled in City Park in 1906 following a fundraising campaign organised by members of the Hungarian-American community.

5. House of Houdini
Harry Houdini was born Erik Weisz in Budapest in 1874 before emigrating to the United States with his family. He later became one of America’s most famous illusionists and escape artists.

6. Robert Capa Contemporary Photography Center
Born in Budapest as Endre Friedmann in 1913, Robert Capa built his career abroad and became an American citizen. He went on to become one of the 20th century’s most influential war photographers and helped establish the Magnum Photos agency.

7. Madame Tussauds Budapest
Madame Tussauds Budapest offers visitors the chance to pose beside wax figures representing celebrities, musicians, actors and other international icons, including numerous personalities associated with American popular culture.
Unlike the city’s historical monuments, this attraction provides a playful and interactive American connection. Its central location also makes it easy to include during a walk between the Danube, Vörösmarty Square and the surrounding shopping streets.

8. Michael Jackson memorial tree
An ordinary tree on Erzsébet Square became an unofficial memorial to Michael Jackson after the American singer’s death in 2009. Jackson stayed at the Kempinski Hotel Corvinus during his visits to Budapest, and crowds of fans would gather outside hoping to see him at a window.

9. New York Café
The New York Café has a more substantial American connection than its name alone suggests. The lavish building was originally commissioned by the New York Life Insurance Company and opened in 1894 as the company’s Budapest headquarters.
Its ground-floor café became a celebrated meeting place for Hungarian writers, journalists and artists. 10. Elvis Presley Square
Budapest named a public space after Elvis Presley in recognition of the American singer’s support for Hungary following the 1956 Revolution.
During an American television appearance in January 1957, Elvis drew attention to the suffering of Hungarians and supported fundraising efforts for refugees and those affected by the Soviet suppression of the uprising. Although Elvis never visited Budapest, the square provides an unusual link between the city and the King of Rock and Roll.

11. Tony Curtis and the Tree of Life Memorial
Hollywood actor Tony Curtis was born Bernard Schwartz in New York to Hungarian Jewish parents. He remained proud of his heritage and supported the restoration of Budapest’s Dohány Street Synagogue.
Curtis also helped fund the Emanuel Tree of Life Memorial in the synagogue’s memorial park. The metal weeping willow commemorates Hungarian Jewish victims of the Holocaust, with names engraved on its leaves.

12. The US Embassy, Mindszenty and General Bandholtz
The US Embassy is at the heart of the most concentrated collection of American connections in Budapest. The United States has maintained its diplomatic mission in the imposing Liberty Square building since the 1930s.
After Soviet forces crushed the 1956 Revolution, Cardinal József Mindszenty sought refuge inside the American legation. He remained there for approximately 15 years, living inside the building until he was permitted to leave Hungary in 1971.
Facing the embassy is a statue of US Army General Harry Hill Bandholtz. He served in Budapest as a member of the Inter-Allied Military Mission after the First World War and is remembered in Hungary for confronting Romanian troops who intended to remove objects from the Hungarian National Museum.
