Major cycle parade event causes Budapest traffic disruptions on Saturday

Budapest is set to host the popular I Bike Budapest parade this Saturday, 18 April, bringing significant traffic disruptions across the capital.

Authorities are urging motorists and commuters to plan ahead, as thousands of cyclists are expected to take part in the event, supported by favourable spring weather.

Organised by the Hungarian Cyclists’ Club, the demonstration aims to promote cycling-friendly urban development. The ride will be officially opened by the Dutch ambassador to Hungary, Willem van Ee.

Route and timing

Participants will gather early in the afternoon along Árpád fejedelem Road in Óbuda, with the procession scheduled to depart at 3:00 PM. The route spans several districts, crossing key landmarks including Margaret Bridge, Petőfi Bridge, Andrássy Avenue, and Gellért Square, before concluding in City Park (Városliget). Between 2:30 PM and 6:00 PM, rolling road closures will affect major routes in districts I, II, V, VI, IX, XI, XIII and XIV, writes Blikk.

Travel advice and public transport changes

According to Budapest Transport Centre, vehicle traffic will be restricted along the route, with cross traffic only permitted intermittently. Drivers should expect congestion not only on affected roads but also in surrounding areas.

With tens of thousands expected to attend public transport will also be impacted. Several bus and tram lines will operate on modified routes or with limited stops, particularly in central and southern districts. Travellers are advised to use metro lines M1, M2, M3 and M4 wherever possible for smoother journeys.
