Attention! Scammers impersonate Hungarian police in fraud emails

Unknown fraudsters are sending electronic messages purporting to come from the “Magyar Országos Rendőrség”. However, that is NOT the official name of Hungary’s national police force (which is “Magyar Rendőrség”), the Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County Police Headquarters warned on Wednesday via the police.hu website.

The alert described the messages as clumsily worded—likely machine-translated—and designed to mimic official police requests. The emails demand confirmation, personal details, or monetary payments from recipients, citing various pretexts, the statement added.

Police stressed that they never solicit such information or funds by email. Recipients should ignore the messages, avoid clicking links or downloading attachments, and report them to authorities without delay.
