Hungarian airport near vacation paradise upgraded

A HUF 3bn upgrade was inaugurated at Hévíz-Balaton Airport, in Sármellék, west of Lake Balaton, on Friday.

The runway and taxiways were repaved, the terminal expanded and a new control tower built. The airport can now handle 400 passengers at once, Bálint Nagy, the state secretary for transportation said.

Hévíz-Balaton director Attila Benkő said two charter flights, from Dresden and Antalya, would operate at the airport in 2026, carrying around 10,000 passengers. Cargo traffic at the airport reached 3,700 tonnes in 2025, with departing flights carrying vehicle parts and arrivals carrying mostly consumer goods from China, he added.
