Watch out: Major traffic disruptions expected in Budapest for 15 March celebrations

Significant traffic restrictions are set to affect several districts of Budapest due to events marking 15 March, Hungary’s national holiday, the Budapest Police Headquarters (BRFK) announced on Wednesday via police.hu.

Traffic changes in Budapest for 15 March celebrations

The traffic changes will impact Districts I, II, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX, XI, and XIV.

From 00:00 on Saturday, 14 March, until 02:00 on Monday, 16 March, Andrássy Avenue in District VI, between Oktogon and Heroes’ Square (Hősök tere), will be closed. Additionally, from 12:00 on Saturday until 02:00 on Monday, the stretch from Oktogon to Bajcsy-Zsilinszky Road will also be off-limits to vehicles.

Key streets and bridges affected

On Sunday, 15 March, from 08:00 to 17:00, key streets in District V will be closed, including Alkotmány Street, Garibaldi Street, Akadémia Street, Szalay Street, Balassi Bálint Street, Széchenyi Embankment, and Honvéd Street. Podmaniczky Street, between Bajcsy-Zsilinszky Road and Teréz Boulevard, will be closed from 08:00 to 20:00, while the section of Tűzoltó Street between Ferenc Boulevard and Angyal Street in District IX will be off-limits until midnight. The Szabadság Bridge will also be closed between 12:00 and 20:00.

Further closures include Dózsa György Avenue between Podmaniczky Street and Városligeti Fasor from 12:00 to 22:00 on Saturday, as well as Kodály Körönd, Andrássy Avenue, Városligeti Boulevard (between Gundel Károly Street and Heroes’ Square), Kós Károly Promenade, and Olof Palme Promenade (from Verona Angels Street to Heroes’ Square) from 14:00 to 22:00. Heroes’ Square itself will also be closed.

The police warned that from 10:00 on 15 March, several routes will be periodically closed, including Árpád Fejedelem Avenue–Margaret Bridge–Jászai Mari Square–Szent István Boulevard–Nyugati Square–Bajcsy-Zsilinszky Road–Alkotmány Street–Kossuth Lajos Square, and sections of Bajcsy-Zsilinszky Road and Váci Road, including the Nyugati Square overpass. Between 13:00 and 16:30, temporary closures will also affect József Attila Street, Károly Boulevard, and the Deák Ferenc Square–Bajcsy-Zsilinszky Road–Andrássy Avenue–Heroes’ Square route.
