First hybrid geothermal power plant to be built in Hungary

MVM Zöld Generáció, a unit of state-owned energy company MVM Group, will build a hybrid geothermal power plant, the first in Hungary, near Zsana (South Hungary), Energy Minister Csaba Lantos announced on site on Tuesday.
MVM Zöld Generáció will drill to a depth of 2,400-2,500 meters to tap a 140- to 150-degree Celsius thermal water source, Lantos said. A 3.5-4.5 MW power plant could be built at the site, he added.
Of the 674,000 homes with district heating in Hungary, 10pc are heated with geothermal, but the use of geothermal to generate electricity is limited, he said.
MVM CEO Károly Mátrai called the project “a significant step” toward increased use of renewables and greater energy sovereignty.
