On 25 March 2026, a ceremonial event dedicated to the ancient spring festival of Navruz took place at the historic Ybl Villa in Budapest.

The event was organized by the Representation of the Organization of Turkic States (OTS) with the active support of the embassies of OTS member states, including the Embassy of the Republic of Uzbekistan in Hungary. Approximately 150 guests attended the event, representing Hungary’s political, academic, expert, and cultural circles, as well as members of the diplomatic corps.

The participation of the Republic of Uzbekistan as the Guest of Honor in the cultural program gave special significance to the celebration. The Uzbek delegation, led by Mr. Avazkhon Tadjikhanov, First Deputy Minister of Culture of the Republic of Uzbekistan, delivered a keynote cultural address, highlighting the country’s contribution to preserving and promoting the traditions of Navruz.

Renewal, rebirth, and the triumph of life

Navruz, meaning “new day,” has for millennia symbolized renewal, rebirth, and the triumph of life. Marking the arrival of spring, it reflects the awakening of nature and the beginning of a new cycle, bringing people together around the values of peace, harmony, and mutual respect. Transcending religious and cultural boundaries, it serves as a living bridge between peoples and civilizations.

The event opened with welcoming remarks by Mr. Balázs Hendrich, Executive Director of the OTS Representation in Hungary. He emphasized that Navruz is one of the key cultural symbols of the Turkic world and embodies shared values of unity, solidarity, and dialogue. He also underlined the importance of celebrating this occasion in Hungary, a country known for its openness to cultural exchange, and expressed his gratitude to the diplomatic missions of OTS member states for their contributions.

Azerbaijani ambassador greeted the event

This was followed by remarks from H.E. Mr. Tahir Taghizade, Ambassador of Azerbaijan to Hungary, representing the Chair country of the OTS. He highlighted the universal significance of Navruz and its role as a cultural bridge between civilizations. Referring to the Budapest Declaration of 2025, he noted that the Heads of State reaffirmed the transnational importance of Navruz and its contribution to strengthening cultural dialogue. He also outlined Azerbaijan’s priorities in advancing cultural and humanitarian cooperation within the OTS framework.

As noted, a central moment of the ceremony was the address by Mr. Avazkhon Tadjikhanov. In his speech, he stressed that Navruz is an integral part of Uzbekistan’s national identity, reflecting respect for traditions, love for the land, and strong community values. He emphasized that celebrating Navruz in Budapest symbolizes a meaningful dialogue between East and West, connecting diverse cultural heritages. On behalf of Uzbekistan, he expressed gratitude to the Hungarian side and the OTS for organizing the event and wished all participants peace, prosperity, and new beginnings.

The celebration continued with a rich cultural program. A Hungarian musical ensemble led by Ms. Tilla Török opened the concert with refined compositions, setting a spring-inspired atmosphere.

Particular attention of the audience was drawn to the performance of the Uzbek ensemble “Turon.” The artists presented vibrant and dynamic pieces that harmoniously combined traditional music, choreography, and expressive stage presence. Their performance received enthusiastic applause and became one of the highlights of the evening.

The finale of the concert gained special symbolic meaning when Uzbek and Hungarian artists, without prior rehearsal, performed a joint improvisational duet. This spontaneous artistic collaboration became a vivid embodiment of cultural understanding and friendship, highlighting the high level of trust and the strategic partnership between Uzbekistan and Hungary. The musicians’ ability to instantly connect on stage left a strong impression on the audience.

During the garden reception, guests were offered a variety of traditional dishes from OTS member states. The highlight of the culinary experience was the Uzbek plov, prepared by the Embassy of Uzbekistan according to a traditional recipe. Its rich flavor and aroma impressed the guests, many of whom described it as the gastronomic centerpiece of the evening.

The celebration of Navruz in Budapest became a vivid example of how an ancient tradition continues to play an important role in the modern world, bringing peoples together and strengthening cultural ties. The event not only showcased the richness and diversity of the cultural heritage of the Turkic states but also demonstrated the high level of cooperation with Hungary as a key partner in Europe. As a symbol of renewal and hope, Navruz once again proved its power to inspire dialogue, mutual understanding, and cooperation.
