FBI and Hungarian police capture US-wanted fugitive in Győr after years on the run – video

Hungarian authorities, working in close cooperation with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), have arrested a 48-year-old Hungarian man in Győr who had been wanted in the United States for years.

Hungarian police and the FBI cooperate

The suspect, identified as Csaba N., had been sought by American authorities over alleged possession of child sexual abuse material. According to official reports, the arrest was carried out on 17 March at his home following an extensive international investigation.

The operation involved Hungary’s National Bureau of Investigation (KR NNI), supported by FBI agents stationed in Hungary, as well as the International Law Enforcement Cooperation Centre (NEBEK), which coordinated cross-border efforts.

Years of evasion and escalating warrants

The case against the man dates back several years. US authorities had previously seized electronic devices from him that allegedly contained illicit material, leading to multiple proceedings being launched.

After he became unreachable, a court in Manatee County issued an arrest warrant in November 2022. When efforts to locate him in Florida failed, a federal warrant followed in May 2024.

The case escalated further when an international arrest warrant was issued on 21 January this year, prompting US authorities to seek assistance from Hungary.

Tracked down in Hungary

Investigators suspected the man had fled to Hungary, where he had reportedly settled two years ago. Following a detailed and wide-ranging investigation, Hungarian and US officers were able to identify his location in Győr.

The joint task force moved in and apprehended him without incident at his residence.

Extradition proceedings underway

The Budapest Metropolitan Court ordered the man’s extradition detention on 18 March, one day after his arrest. He is expected to be extradited to the United States at a later stage, where legal proceedings against him will continue.
