Schiffer ‘did not abandon’ LMP, says Szél
Budapest, June 1 (MTI) – András Schiffer, who has resigned as co-leader of green opposition LMP, “has not abandoned” the party, Bernadett Szél, who is now LMP’s sole head, said in an interview to Index.
At the same time, Szél told the news portal that she did not agree with his decision.
In the interview published on Wednesday, she said Schiffer’s move did not spell LMP’s end since the party was based on a “network” and operated as a grassroots democratic organisation.
Szél said LMP is organisationally strong and there was no need to restructure the party.
LMP will elect officials in the summer and she said there were several viable contenders to take up the leadership. She mentioned Ákos Hadházy as one possibility.
Szél ruled out forming an alliance with any other political force, though she said cooperation with radical nationalist party Jobbik and the Socialist Party was conceivable.
Schiffer, a founder of the party, informed the party’s board about his decision on Monday evening. He told index.hu in an interview that he would quit his position on June 1 and return his parliamentary mandate on August 31.
