Will the new Hungarian government end the Russian upgrade of the Paks Nuclear Power Plant?

Rosatom is prepared to defend the effectiveness of the Paks 2 project, the validity of its price and other parameters, the CEO of the general contractor for the upgrade of Hungary’s only commercial nuclear power plant said at a press conference in Cairo on Tuesday, MTI’s Moscow correspondent reported.
“We hear that there’s interest in our project as the head of the winning party has already talked about it several times, including a little critically regarding, say, the price,” Alexey Likhachev said, referring to Peter Magyar, the head of the Tisza Party, which won elections in Hungary on Sunday.
He highlighted the benefits to the Hungarian people of the project that would boost the share of nuclear in Hungary’s electricity mix over 70pc and pave the way for exports of electricity.
Likhachev noted that the decision on Paks 2, including the price, had been made public, in cooperation with the IAEA.
“We will answer all questions, about the price too,” he said.
“Of course, it will be necessary to pass an exam, in a good sense of the word. An examination of the effectiveness of the project, the validity of its price and other parameters. We are absolutely ready for this exam,” he added.
Under an agreement signed in 2014, Rosatom is building two more blocks at the Paks NPP, each with capacity of 1.2 GW. The blocks are expected to go online in 2030-2031.
