Károly Gerendai: Sziget Festival’s numbers were terrifying, but they successfully redefined the event

Change language:

Károly Gerendai, one of the founders of the Sziget Festival, said during a press tour that the festival’s numbers were terrifying, prompting a rethink of operations. He added that they had consciously avoided capital from foreign investors, opting instead for partners invested in the festival’s success.

Sziget Festival was in serious trouble

According to Pénzcentrum, Gerendai explained that they brought in investors who bought 1–5% of the shares, resulting in 30% of the company being sold. The remaining 70% remains in the hands of management. The aim of this new model is not merely to create a festival that survives, but one that can evolve.

To that end, they plan to redefine the Sziget Festival’s identity. Gerendai noted that the previous international owner had simply brought in names that foreign guests could see in their own countries, which is no longer enough. “We have to show what makes Sziget different—how this experience, atmosphere, and cultural menu stand out,” he said. Sziget no longer wants to meet the sector’s “compulsory” expectations, but to focus on guests’ needs.

Ticket sales reached acceptable level

This means inviting more Hungarian performers and organising programmes for younger generations. Gerendai said ticket sales have already reached 2025 levels from major sending countries like the Netherlands, Italy, England, France, and Germany. Guest numbers from neighbouring countries are also rising. Organisers are optimistic that the new structure will prove sustainable in the long run.

They will create a new, huge stage with Budapest Park for Hungarian performers. The Dead Klub (Töklábú) will provide alternative techno music in cooperation with Arzenál and Turbina.

Cooperation with Budapest, broader target audience

There will be dedicated districts for urban sports, street culture, and NGOs. The main stage will get a new design, along with more chill zones, wellness spots, cafés, and alcohol-free cocktail bars. All drinks will be 10% cheaper before 6 p.m. They will recreate the food court concept along the lines of the Time Out Market, offering quality gastronomy.

Cooperation with Budapest will reach a new level. Citypass will return, including free BKK use, a one-time free bath ticket, and city programmes. The aim is to connect the Sziget experience with Budapest, especially for foreign visitors, through urban walking tours and thematic programmes that embed the festival in the city’s cultural and tourism network.

Ultimately, the organisers want to create a festival experience that goes beyond a set of concerts—an intensive yet comfortable array of programmes.
