Euro2016 – Hungary coach Bernd Storck: I doff my hat to the team
Hungary coach Bernd Storck feels his team performed better in the 3-3 draw against Portugal than they did in their first two matches at UEFA EURO 2016.
”Again I must congratulate my team because we have successfully made progress compared to the first two matches. We knew it would be a hard match but we defended and attacked well. We were also a little lucky with the set-piece situations but overall I have to doff my hat to the whole team because our performances are improving as we progress in the European Championship” he said at the post-match press conference.
“I’m not surprised at how we played; the team played wonderfully despite there being five changes in the starting eleven. We rested players because of possible yellow cards. Thanks to everyone in the squad of 23 being of a similar level we were able to show first-class teamwork. The crowd were wonderful, they even managed to surpass the atmosphere created in the previous match”.
Portugal coach Fernando Santos said that his team had played with the aim of securing first place in the group but will have to make do with going through in third. “Everything was the opposite from our first two matches: we attacked well but weren’t strong defensively. The goals came fast and furious; our opponents twice took the lead from deflected shots. I’d like to thank my players for coming back three times; the important thing is that we’ve progressed from the group. It would have been better to be first but if we had lost today we would have gone home, this is why we didn’t risk pushing for a late winner” he said.
