President marks Forestry Association anniversary in Romania
Valea Crisului, Romania, June 23 (MTI) – President János Áder attended a convention of the National Forestry Association, marking its 150th anniversary, at central Romania’s Valea Crisului (Sepsikőröspatak) on Thursday.
“Forests are an irreplaceable asset to the nation,” Áder said in his address at the event, and noted that as early as 1870 forestry experts had realised that cutting forests down impacted the climate. He also referred to Hungary’s forestry act of 1879, which stipulated that forests should be cultivated in a sustainable manner.
The Forestry Association is one of Hungary’s oldest civil trade organisations.
Zsolt Semjén, Hungary’s deputy prime minister, said in his address that “extreme approaches to forests must be rejected”. Semjén added that the industrial view was one such approach, the forests seen as raw material with no consideration to ecological aspects.
