Jobbik: EU, Hungary govts both to blame for country’s membership ‘failure’
Budapest (MTI) – The European Union’s “amateurish, incompetent” leadership and Hungary’s past governments are all to blame for the country’s EU membership having been a failure since it joined the bloc twelve years ago, a Jobbik MP said on Friday.
Márton Gyöngyösi said in a statement that the ruling Fidesz party “has made a U-turn” in its relationship with the EU.
He said that from the beginning of Hungary’s membership, Fidesz politicians had always “carried out Brussels’ diktats”, pointing to Fidesz’s support for the Lisbon Treaty, amendments to the constitution and implementation of austerity measures as examples.
EU trends show that political groups that want to radically reform the bloc, like Jobbik, are gaining popularity, Gyöngyösi said.
He proposed a referendum on renegotiating the EU Treaty so as to ensure that it serves Hungary’s interests.
