Katinka Hosszú’s video message for the anniversary of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution
The three-time Olympic champion Katinka Hosszú made a great video message for the anniversary of the 1956 Hungarian revolution.
For the 60th anniversary of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution, I would like to pay my respect to those heroes, who were fighting for the freedom of the Hungarian nation. The fights were not only on the streets of Budapest but also in the swimming pools of Melbourne. Me, as an athlete, I know and understand how it feels to represent a nation. I can only imagine the pressure that the Hungarian water polo team must have been under prior to the start of their game against the Soviet Union. Their courage and determination should be an example for all not just the athletes. Let’s be proud of them, for what they have done for our country and for all of us!
Let’s celebrate this special day together!

Let me tell you how I remember the Hungarian uprising. I was 5 years old; the fourth child of a family of six children. We lived in a time in Hungary when you were not allowed to speak your mind. You never had enough to eat. Bread was rationed by the Soviet Union. I remember so vividly listening to the Hungarian national anthem and the the machine gun fire. People crying, the radio announcer pleading for help. Anyone. No one came. We did leave everything behind, our farmhouse, our families; our hearts. This move made by our parents changed our lives forever. We walked to the border with our bag of cornmeal flour on a sled. As we came close enough to the barbed wire fence we feared for our lives. Some of the soldiers remained were sympathetic to the Soviet Union and some as our guards cut the barbed wire so we could enter Austria. We have adopted America as our home. I would defend this country with my life. Still I feel a loss, my culture , my family. We have visited our homeland since and have seen the wonderful growth in all areas of Hungary. Let there be peace!
