Hungarian households throw away HUF 100 bn worth of food annually
Budapest, November 18 (MTI) – Hungarian households throw away 100 billion forints (EUR 320m) worth of unused food produce each year, the state secretary in charge of overseeing food chains told a professional conference on Friday.
Róbert Zsigó told the opening event of the National Food Chain Safety Office’s scheme to prevent food waste that according to European Union estimates, 1.8 million tonnes of food is thrown away in Hungary each year. Households account for over 20 percent of the total, or 400,000 tonnes.
The EU estimates show that 39kg of food is wasted per person in Hungary but Hungarians estimates show that it is actually 46kg. The campaign aims to reduce this by 8-10 percent by the year 2020, Zsigó said.
