Jobbik seeks President Áder’s assistance to resolve constitutional amendment issue

Budapest, November 23 (MTI) – The opposition Jobbik party has appealed to President János Áder to help resolve the “impasse” around plans to amend the constitution and Jobbik’s demand that the government should drop its residency bond scheme.

Jobbik leader Gábor Vona told a press conference that he had asked Áder to “intervene, use his reputation and the power of his position”.

On November 8, Jobbik denied support for the government’s constitutional amendment bill, after the government refused to drop the bond scheme. Jobbik then submitted virtually the same bill to parliament, completed with one stipulation which would make granting foreigners a residency permit for money unconstitutional, Vona said, but added that parliament’s judicial committee would not even discuss the proposal.

Vona said he had requested a personal meeting with the president to discuss details of his proposal.

According to ruling Fidesz, Jobbik has “put on a show”. In a statement, the party noted that back in April Jobbik had called anyone a “traitor” who did not support the government’s constitutional amendment plans, then it failed to vote for it in parliament. “The opposition is irresponsible… they support Brussels rather than Hungary,” the statement said.
