Ader thanks Bavaria for help in 1956
Munich (MTI) – Hungarian President Janos Ader on Friday thanked Bavarian Minister-President Horst Seehofer for his state’s support for Hungarians fleeing their country after the failed revolution in 1956.
Hungary will never forget the help Bavaria provided for “so many of our people in 1956,” Anita Altorjai, the president’s press chief, quoted Ader after his meeting with Seehofer.
Ader noted the help given to Hungary by the Hungarian Maltese Charity, founded in Bavaria, during the democratic transition in 1989-90, while Seehofer said Germany would never forget Hungary’s help in its reunification.
The two discussed Europe’s migration crisis and its long-term challenges. Seehofer noted that Bavaria has received some 340,000 migrants over the past six weeks, which he said has been hard on the state. He stressed that Europe must find a solution to the crisis as quickly as possible.
Later in the day, Ader laid a wreath at the Hungarian Catholic Mission’s memorial plaque commemorating the 1956 revolution, and paid a visit to students of the Institute of Finno-Ugric Studies at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich.
Ader visited the headquarters of carmaker BMW, where Nicolas Peter, the head of BMW’s European sales, presented the manufacturer’s electric mobility projects.
On Thursday, Ader attended a commemoration of the 1956 revolution, held at the Hungarian consulate-general. The ceremony was attended by Joachim Herrmann, Bavaria’s interior minister.
