Ambassador Pressman: an anti-American attack has been launched from above in Hungary

The United States Ambassador to Budapest, David Pressman said that Orbán’s identification of the United States as an adversary of Hungary is a cause for concern. He says Republicans also frown on Orbán’s Russian friendship.

The United States Ambassador to Hungary said that the anti-American rhetoric of Orbán is unprecedented from an ally country. David Pressman said that Viktor Orbán’s identification of the United States as Hungary’s adversary at the beginning of March is worrying, Népszava reports. The news portal accompanied the ambassador on his visit to Szeged last Tuesday.

David Pressman said that he believes that US-Hungarian relations can be improved. At the same time, the ambassador left no doubt as to which side should change its behaviour in order to achieve this, Népszava writes. Pressman criticised the Orbán government for not distancing itself from Russia despite the war.

According to him, there is bipartisan agreement and a complete consensus in national security circles on concerns about this, and some members of the opposition Republican Party have even tougher positions on the Hungarian leadership.

Fidesz is vainly hoping that the outcome of next year’s US presidential election will bring a turnaround in bilateral relations, Pressman noted.

The ambassador told the paper that he does not take the smear campaign against him in the pro-Fidesz Hungarian press personally. Rather, he considers them as a top-down attack against his country.

During his trip to Szeged, Pressman held talks with Szeged Mayor László Botka, and in a café with a representative of an unnamed LGBTQI+ rights organisation.
