Speeding American soldier caused fatal accident in Hungary: 3 children orphaned – video

Moreover, one of the children, an 11-year-old girl, remains in intensive care after sustaining life-threatening injuries in yesterday’s crash. According to information available so far, the culprit was a speeding American soldier who was driving a sports car at such high speed that he crossed into oncoming traffic and collided head-on with a Hungarian family’s car.
Three children have been left orphaned
A 43-year-old father of three died as a result of the brutal collision involving a speeding American soldier driving a sports car on the winding Bakony roads between Noszlop and Ajka. The soldier reportedly failed to take road and weather conditions into account and was travelling at excessive speed. After losing control of the vehicle, he crossed into the opposite carriageway and crashed head-on into a family car that was travelling normally.
There were five people in the family car: the parents and their three children. The children, aged 9, 11 and 13, were sitting in the back seats. The family had earlier been skating in Ajka. All five were taken to hospital, but only the 43-year-old father and the 11-year-old girl suffered life-threatening injuries. The father later died from his injuries, meaning the children will now grow up without him. Doctors are still fighting to save the girl’s life.

One child had to be cut free from the car
Hardly anything remains of the front of the family car, as the photo below shows. One of the children was trapped inside and firefighters had to cut him out of the seat. The American soldier’s blue sports car looks far better, but its front end sustained obvious damage.
According to SzolnokOn, the crash was caused by a misinterpreted racing situation. The American soldier, who was driving a Dodge, allegedly attempted to overtake a Honda he considered sporty, perceiving the situation as a race. While the Honda driver slowed down, the soldier accelerated too aggressively, lost control of his vehicle and crashed into the five-member family’s Dacia. One of the Dodge’s wheels detached upon impact and struck the Honda, which was also badly damaged. This report includes additional photos of the Dodge.

A spokesperson for the emergency services said the father sustained life-threatening chest injuries and could not be saved by doctors. The 11-year-old girl sustained severe chest and skull injuries, as well as injuries to her limbs. The other four individuals involved in the crash were taken to hospital in stable condition.

The American soldier involved may be stationed at Pápa
Based on available data, roughly 2,700 American soldiers are currently stationed in Hungary, most of them at Pápa Air Base and Debrecen. Although no official statement has yet been issued, the crash site is only a few dozen kilometres from Pápa, making it likely that the soldier involved was stationed there.

Pápa Air Base hosts international military units, including the Heavy Airlift Wing operating under the Strategic Airlift Capability (SAC) programme. The base operates C-17 Globemaster III aircraft for NATO member states and has previously supported international missions, including operations related to the withdrawal from Afghanistan. Currently, around 13 nations and approximately 850 soldiers participate in similar missions.
