Man stabbed on tram because he spoke out about poor mask use – Video
Not too long before six in the morning on Tuesday, a 64-year-old man was stabbed on tram 1 around Mester Street, Budapest.
As we reported earlier, the mandatory wearing of facemasks has been the cause of many conflicts and arguments in the Hungarian capital, especially on public transportation. This time, things turned violent, too.
According to 24, the man who got stabbed was taken to hospital with life-threatening conditions, while his attacker escaped from the scene of the crime. The police then started chasing the attacker.
Policemen from the criminal department of the Budapest Metropolitan Police (BRFK) have arrested the suspect – as you can see in the following video published by BRFK –, a 40-year-old male Budapest citizen, within a couple of hours in Józsefváros (District 8).
Soma Csécsi, the spokesman of the Budapest Metropolitan Police, told 24 that based on the information available for the moment, the cause of first the argument and then the stabbing was that the older passenger told the other man to use his facemask appropriately. This caused a fight between the two men and, eventually, the older men who asked for the proper use of the facemask was stabbed.
The Budapest Metropolitan Police initiated investigation proceedings on the causing of life-threatening injuries.
The new restrictions introduced this week to prevent the spread of the coronavirus have also resulted in some tension. Students of Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME) destroyed parts of BME’s Schönherz Dormitory with a hammer following the announcement of the closing of dormitories. The university ordered an investigation and the Budapest Metropolitan Police initiated investigation proceedings.
Meanwhile, on the last night before all bars and clubs had to close due to the new restrictive measures, a brutal public brawl broke out in the party district of Budapest. One of the bars in the area offered great discounts to celebrate the last day before lockdown, attracting a lot of young people there. Two friend groups got into a fight with each other, but eventually, more people joined, and they ended up ruining the bar completely by grabbing all they could, including chairs and tables. The police interrogated three men and two women as suspects. Two people suffered minor injuries and were taken to hospital.
