Arctic cold to sweep into Hungary — new seasonal record possible

Change language:

Following a mild weekend with temperatures around 20°C, a drastic change is on the horizon: from Monday, an Arctic air mass will move into the country, bringing frosty nights and cool days. According to Időkép’s forecast, the most noticeable impact will be on temperatures, and a new cold record is not out of the question.

From mild weekend to sudden change

While this weekend may still see temperatures close to 20°C, windy conditions will make it feel cooler. These will be among the warmest October days this year, as most of the recent weeks have been marked by below-average temperatures.

Cold front arrives Monday

Időkép reports that Monday’s cold front will sweep down into the Carpathian Basin from Scandinavia, on the edge of an anticyclone situated over the British Isles. Significant rainfall is not expected, although isolated showers may occur amid sunny intervals, scattered clouds, and breezy weather.

  • Maximum daytime temperatures will still be between 15°C and 20°C.
  • By Tuesday, highs will drop to just 11–16°C.

Frosty nights and possible seasonal record

From Wednesday, winter-like frosty nights will return. In frost-prone areas, temperatures could fall as low as –5°C to –4°C. This will not only bring an early touch of winter but also create the possibility of a new seasonal cold record later next week.

What this means for daily life

The sudden drop in temperatures will affect clothing choices, heating habits, and gardening activities. It’s a good time to bring out warmer coats, protect plants from frost, and check heating systems, as several areas may wake up to severe sub-zero temperatures.
