Authorities spot-check taxis at World Athletics Championships Budapest
The authorities checked 234 taxis in a bid to curb rip-off drivers during the World Athletics Championships, the police said on their website. Several permits were withdrawn between August 21 and 23, they added.
One driver is suspected of tampering with the meter to show higher prices, and 9 permits were withdrawn for fixed pricing and other irregularities. Police have also started five procedures for over-charging passengers and for failing to issue an invoice. The condition of taxis was also checked, and 12 vehicles will undergo a thorough inspection, the statement said.
