BREAKING NEWS! First ever Hungarian Gold at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games

The short track speed skating event at the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games ended today. The Hungarian team excelled at the men’s 500 metres event, but they astonished us even more in the closing round: the last challenge was the men’s 5000 metres, where the Hungarian team placed first, reports online daily 24.hu.

The Hungarian team consisted of Liu Shaolin, Liu Shaoang, Viktor Knoch and Csaba Burján. At first, they tried to get ahead of the competitors, but the Olympic recorder South-Korean team took over the lead. The South-Koreans were eventually ‘dethroned’ by the Chinese team.

At half-way through, the Hungarian team was third, while the South-Korean team dropped out, thus giving a boost to the Hungarians. Throughout the last 8 rounds, the Hungarian team was second, the Chinese remaining in their leading positions.

At the third round before the finish line, the Hungarian team performed a spectacular trick, helping Sándor Liu Shaolin cross the line as first in Hungarian colours, securing the gold.

This is Hungary’s first gold in the history of the Olympic Winter Games.

China placed second, Canada third and South-Korea fourth.

Hungary’s last medal at the Olympic Winter Games was won in 1980 at Lake Placid by the ice dance duo of Krisztina Regőczy and András Sallay. Hungary has won so far one gold, two silver and four bronze medals.

At this year’s Winter Games, the short track speed skaters were the most successful: the women’s team placed fourth, Sándor Liu Shaolin placed fifth both on 500 metres and 1500 metres, while Petra Jászapáti placed sixth on 1500 metres.
