The government has decided to launch a National Consultation because of disputes with institutions in Brussels that affect Hungary’s economy and security, the state secretary of the Prime Minister’s Cabinet Office said on Saturday.
In a video message posted on Facebook, Csaba Dömötör said the nationwide survey was also necessary to ensure “decisions about the future remain in our own hands”.
“We’re being pressured to give more money for the Russian-Ukrainian war, which is not exactly an effort to advance peace,” he said.
Brussels also wants the Hungarian government to accept a new migration package that not only relocates migrants but requires they be allowed to immigrate even before their asylum applications are weighed, he added.
“The significance of this can’t be overstated, considering the recent terrorist attacks in Europe and shootings on our southern border,” he said.
Touching on economic issues that will be addressed in the National Consultation, he said the government’s position was that families shouldn’t have to shoulder the burdens of the crisis, while companies that rake in windfall profits should “take their fair share of the burden”.
In contrast, Brussels wants to eliminate support for household utilities fees, interest rate freezes and the windfall profit tax, which would mean an “enormous additional expenditure” for families, he added.
The government will also ask people to weigh in on Brussels’ request for more money from the government even as it withholds money due the country, he said.
Questions to be included in the National Consultation will be presented in detail in coming days, he added.

Question 1
Should Hungary waste more money on national consultations?
Question 2
Should the government publish the results of the consultation at the same time they publish the questions?
Question 3
There is no question 3
The answer should be No, No and No.
Hungary does not support Ukraine’s war. Hungary does not support Ukraine because Zelenskyy, first, is a dictator, the Ukrainian government is corrupt-money given to Ukrainian armed forces disappeared-foreign weapons are sold in the black market, second, Ukranian government oppressed the Hungarian minority. Only an idiot would finance such corrupt Ukrainian government.
The land of the country of Hungary belongs only to Hungarians. Therefore, illegal, uneducated, many criminal aliens should never be admitted to the country. Those that manage to be smuggled in must be deported to their homeland. That is the only way to deal with criminals.

Janos, you are correct, there is Question 3. Why should Hungary give money to Brussels when Brussels never honored its agreement and already sent money meant for Hungary to Ukraine.
Janos, right on all questions. The last “consultation” resulted in us paying for billboards all over the country and a return of only 10% of the population, immediately touted as a “mandate”. Let’s have a national consultation that the Orban government fix its rule of law issues, hire teachers at a living wage, and stop saying “peace” with no plan except to give Ukraine to Putin. How about one to stop building military and stadiums until the health care system is fixed?
@mariavontheresa – the EU needs to send our Politicians money and stop asking questions, even though there is a lot of funny stuff going on in Hungary. Copenhagen criteria, etc. are for New Members only. Existing Members, including relatively late joiners such as Hungary, should be exempt from future compliance. Is this what you are propagating?
Funds and assistance going to Ukraine are being closely monitored and audited – https://anti-fraud.ec.europa.eu/media-corner/news/olaf-signs-cooperation-arrangement-ukraines-state-audit-service-2023-04-03_en (as you know, our Politicians prefer to repay EU funds from Hungarian taxpayers money rather than face OLAF). The Americans are also being quite diligent – https://oig.usaid.gov/our-work/ukraine-oversight.
PS – did our Mr. Orbán eventually solve the Budapest-Belgrade line issue when he was in China?

Norbert, money donated by US taxpayers did disappear; this item was published by several newspapers, including NYT and WAPO. The articles stated that the punishment of the government employees, that stole the money, was they were fired. The criminals were not jailed, and no attempt was made to recover the money. Weapons given to Ukraine appeared on the black market. Norbert, please tell the world, why would you want to give more money to corrupt Ukraine. Would you rather not use that money to buy your children a present (if you have any)?
Why should Hungary give more money to EU when the EU did not honor its agreement and withheld money from Hungary on made up excuses because Hungary would not say “ya whol”.
Ursula von der Leyen, mulls and smooches Zelensky and wants Ukraine in the EU, yet Balkan countries have been waiting for years.
Hungary and her people believe in fairness, too bad the rest of EU countries just want small EU countries to cede sovereignty.
Today, most EU nations supported a UN resolution that did not condemn Hamas, the terrorist’ group, a group of beheaded babies, raped women and burned families alive. Thank God, Hungary, Austria, Czech Republic and 11 other nations did not support the resolution. How can anyone be proud and belong to a group that supports terrorist, countries like Germany, France, Belgium, Holland, Danmark, etc.. It is incredible Germany that carried out the Holocaust actually supported the resolution. It seems Germany is ruing the fact that the country did not succeed in total genocide of the Jewish people.
