Chaos at Budapest Airport! Departures, arrivals resumed!
Departures and arrivals at Liszt Ferenc International Airport in Budapest were resumed on Friday morning but several morning flights had to be cancelled, airport operator Budapest Airport said.
Runway 2 was damaged at 11.30pm on Thursday and since runway 1 is closed for a revamp, the airport had to be closed down for technical repairs.
A total of 14 flights could not be received in Budapest during the night and in the morning, they instead landed in Vienna, Bratislava and Debrecen. Several morning services had to be cancelled.
During the night, Wizz Air services from London, Madrid, Larnaca, Tel Aviv, Malaga and Barcelona, and a Ryanair service from Bristol landed in other airports.
In the morning, Wizz Air services from London, Milan, Barcelona and Saint Petersburg, and Brussels Airlines’ service from Brussels had to be cancelled.
Budapest Airport spokesman Mihály Hardy said
the damage to runway 2 was caused by a departing flight and further investigation is needed to uncover the details and the cause.
The edge of the runway was damaged and could be repaired with fast setting asphalt.
Seven morning flights had to be cancelled and schedules are expected to be mostly back on track before noon, Hardy said.
Friday is usually the busiest day at the airport so some services could still suffer delays in the afternoon if Eurocontrol is unable to allocate slots as a result of the busy airspace, he added.

You missed Brussels Airlines! I was on flight 2829 which also landed in Bratislava. Total chaos in Bratislava as no help was offered from Brussels Airlines or Bratislava airport. Everybody had to take care about their own misery to find transportation back to Budapest. At 3 am!
