According to tozsdeforum.hu, Budapest would like to join Global Design Cities Organization (GDCO), the urban planning and development world body – Budapest Assembly decided on Wednesday.
The organization aims to improve the citizens’ quality of life by enhancing sustainable development, to create a more livable urban environment, to mutually share urban planning practices and to strengthen cooperation and solidarity between cities. In addition, it wants to seek solutions for problems affecting cities which can give answers to the accelerated urbanization process.
A town becomes a full member of the organization, if the General Assembly of GDCO approves its application. It is not required to pay registration or membership fee for the membership, tozsdeforum.hu said.
Since the 2010 establishment, the membership of GDCO increased to 26 which represent 19 countries worldwide. Among the members, Ankara, Bangkok, Cape Town, Eindhoven, Istanbul, Kazan, Kuala Lumpur, Nicosia, Rotterdam, Sofia, Seoul, Taipei, Yangzhou are listed.
According to the proposal, which was adopted, Mayor of Ankara Melih Gokcek asked the Mayor of Budapest to join GDCO. The city of Ankara has been the President of the organization since the 2011 June elections.
