Modernisation of Budapest-Belgrade railway line to be completed by the end of 2025

The modernisation of the railway line connecting Budapest and Belgrade will be completed by the end of this year, which will bring the two countries’ capitals practically within arm’s reach of each other, announced Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó on Friday in Belgrade.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the minister described the modernisation of the railway as an extremely important and successful cooperation, pointing out that as a result, a comfortable and fast train journey will connect the two capitals.

“In order for this to truly be fast and comfortable, it is necessary that the train does not have to wait long at the border due to border checks, customs inspections, or passport control. That’s why we are now trying to agree that customs and border checks can be carried out while the train is moving,” Szijjártó explained.

“Previously, those who lived in the western part of the country may remember when customs officers boarded the train to Vienna in Győr to carry out the necessary checks by the time the train reached Hegyeshalom, so the train did not have to stop at the border for long,” he recalled.

“We will solve this with the Serbians as well, so the railway line connecting Budapest and Belgrade will enable truly competitive, short-duration train travel between the two capitals,” he added.
