Outrage in Budapest: BKK officer assaulted while colleague looks on – VIDEO

A shocking incident at one of Budapest’s busiest transportation hubs, Blaha Lujza Square, has sparked outrage after a female security officer of the Budapest Transport Centre (BKK) was violently attacked in broad daylight — as her male colleague stood by and failed to intervene.

Caught on camera

The assault, which occurred on 26 May at the 4-6 tram stop, was captured on video and quickly went viral on social media. The footage, spotted first by Tények, shows a woman attacker grabbing the female officer by the hair, forcing her to her knees, and then throwing her to the ground. The BKK employee is heard screaming, “Let me go!” and desperately calling out to her colleague, “Call the police on the service phone!”

Despite being only a few steps away, the male officer did not attempt to physically intervene. Instead, he was seen shifting uncomfortably from one foot to the other before eventually making a phone call, presumably to request assistance. Meanwhile, bystanders at the tram stop watched the scene unfold without stepping in.

BKK responds

In a statement to Hungarian news outlet 24.hu, BKK confirmed that the attack took place and emphasised that the victim was performing official duties at the time of the incident. Because the assault targeted a public service employee, the police have launched an official investigation into the case.

BKK also stated that an internal review is underway regarding the actions of the male officer who failed to assist his colleague. “Further decisions regarding disciplinary action will be made after the investigation concludes,” the company said.

The transport company strongly condemned the incident, adding that any form of violence is unacceptable, especially when directed at individuals tasked with ensuring public safety.

Public reaction

The footage has sparked public debate and widespread criticism, particularly concerning the passivity of both the colleague and the onlookers. Many on social media questioned why no one intervened, especially a fellow security officer whose primary role is to handle such situations.
