Budapest’s City Park received acclaimed international tourism award!

Budapest’s City Park has received a prestigious international recognition: the Liget Budapest Project has been awarded the title of “Best Creative and Sustainable Tourism District” at the Creative Tourism Awards ceremony in Barcelona. The honour is particularly significant as the jury selected the winner from 223 applicants representing 28 countries.
Where culture and nature meet
According to the jury’s justification, the project stands out for its exemplary integration of cultural innovation, the renewal of green spaces, and the strengthening of community experiences. In City Park, historic institutions and contemporary architectural landmarks coexist in harmony, while the park’s green areas have also undergone major revitalisation.
Thanks to the developments of recent years, several world-class cultural venues have opened in the area, including the House of Music Hungary and the Museum of Ethnography, both offering interactive exhibitions and a wide range of cultural programmes, writes Turizmus.com. In this category, the project competed with internationally renowned destinations such as Cannes and Easter Island.

A record year for City Park
Since the launch of the Liget Budapest Project, 2025 has proved to be the most successful year for City Park. The combined number of visitors to the completed developments surpassed 14 million, marking a historic milestone. The Museum of Fine Arts alone has welcomed 3.8 million visitors since its reopening.
This strong interest was largely driven by last year’s major exhibitions, including the showcase of China’s Terracotta Army and an exhibition exploring the mysterious life of the painter known as Master M. S. The Museum of Ethnography also attracted large audiences with its temporary exhibitions. The exhibition presenting Székely culture drew more than 1.5 million visitors.

One of Budapest’s key cultural attractions
The House of Music Hungary has also become extremely popular in recent years. In addition to its permanent exhibition and frequent concerts, the 2025 LISTEN world music exhibition attracted significant attention, and a new exhibition dedicated to Freddie Mercury is set to open this spring. According to Benedek Gyorgyevics, CEO of Városliget Zrt., the latest international recognition, along with the many awards received in recent years, confirms that the project’s goals were carefully defined from the outset.
Since 2014, the Creative Tourism Awards have recognised destinations and projects that place creativity at the centre of their tourism strategy while offering engaging experiences and contributing to the development of local communities. The award once again highlights that City Park has become not only one of Budapest’s most important cultural destinations, but also an increasingly prominent attraction on the international tourism map.
