Tragedy in Budapest: 14-year-old boy dies after HÉV accident while using phone and earphones

Change language:

A 14-year-old boy has died in hospital days after being struck by an H5 HÉV suburban train in Budapest’s Óbuda district. The tragedy has deeply shaken two local schools and reignited warnings about distracted crossing near railway lines.

According to SzeretlekMagyarország, the accident happened on Monday evening at around 6:30 PM near the Határ Road pedestrian crossing close to the Római fürdő area in the city’s 3rd district. According to police and witness accounts, the teenager stepped onto the tracks despite the red warning signal while looking at his mobile phone and wearing earphones, likely preventing him from seeing the flashing lights or hearing the approaching train’s horn.

Emergency crews arrived quickly and found the boy unconscious. After life-saving treatment at the scene, paramedics rushed him to a trauma unit in critical condition. He spent several days in intensive care, but doctors were ultimately unable to save his life due to the severity of his injuries, RTL reported.

Witnesses say he never noticed the oncoming HÉV

Reports suggest the HÉV was travelling at around 60 km/h when it struck the teenager. The impact was so severe that he was reportedly thrown nearly 20 metres. The driver is said to have braked and sounded the warning signal, but the boy appears not to have reacted.

Police said the crossing’s light barrier was functioning properly at the time of the accident. Investigators are continuing to examine the exact circumstances as part of criminal proceedings.

This case has, again, highlighted the dangers of mobile phone use and earphones while crossing roads or railway tracks. Budapest police reiterated that anyone who fails to pay attention to their surroundings while travelling can place themselves in life-threatening danger.

Two Óbuda schools mourn the teenager

The boy’s death has left a profound impact on the local community. Two schools in Óbuda, where he studied, shared emotional farewell messages on social media, remembering him as an intelligent, humorous and talented young man.

Tributes and candles have also begun to appear near the tracks, where residents have been leaving flowers in memory of the teenager.

The accident was reportedly the third HÉV crossing incident of the year, though the first in 2026 involving a pedestrian fatality, further intensifying concerns about safety at Budapest’s suburban rail crossings.

Renewed warning over distracted walking

The tragedy is especially striking because a public awareness video about the dangers of earphone use near railway crossings had reportedly been filmed at the very same pedestrian crossing in the past.

Although the crossing includes safety barriers designed to slow pedestrians and force them to look both ways, the incident is a devastating reminder that even built-in safety measures cannot prevent accidents when attention is lost for only a few seconds.

Let this serve as a reminder that HÉV suburban railway crossings require the same level of caution as major train lines, even inside the city. Ignoring warning lights, using headphones or looking at a phone while crossing can have fatal consequences.
