Budapest launches innovative home-sharing scheme pairing elderly residents with young tenants!

Budapest has launched a pioneering housing initiative designed to address two pressing urban issues at the same time: the isolation of elderly residents and the rising cost of accommodation for young people.
The “Reliable Room Rental” scheme connects older people living alone with students or young professionals seeking affordable housing in the Hungarian capital. The programme is supported by European Union funding and forms part of the effort to develop sustainable housing solutions in the city.
Mayor Gergely Karácsony announced that the initiative goes far beyond simply matching strangers. Instead, it is built on a carefully managed process that includes screening, preparation, and a clearly defined legal framework to ensure safe and mutually beneficial cohabitation.
How the programme works
The scheme is specifically designed for elderly homeowners who:
- Live alone in their own property
- Have a spare room available
- Are open to sharing their home
- Would welcome help with everyday tasks
In return, young participants (typically university students or early-career professionals) are offered a stable and affordable place to live in Budapest. They are expected to contribute by assisting with small household duties such as shopping or walking the dog.
Crucially, participants are not paired randomly. Both sides go through a thorough selection and preparation process, and matches are made based on personal preferences and compatibility. This aims to create a harmonious living arrangement rather than a purely transactional rental agreement.
Safety and legal clarity at the core
One of the programme’s key selling points is its structured and transparent framework. All participants undergo personal consultations and preparatory sessions before moving in together.
Each arrangement is governed by a legally binding rental contract, providing clarity and protection for both parties. In addition, professional support is available throughout the cohabitation period, including regular consultations to address any issues that may arise.
Part of a housing strategy
The initiative is being implemented under the “AHA Budapest – Affordable Housing for All” project, which explores innovative housing models with EU co-financing. The goal is to create long-term, scalable solutions to Budapest’s housing challenges.
City officials have also opened the programme to district municipalities, encouraging them to join and strengthen local support networks, particularly in reaching elderly residents who could benefit from the scheme.

By combining social support with practical housing assistance, the programme offers clear advantages for both generations. Elderly residents gain companionship and help with daily life, while young people can access more affordable accommodation in an increasingly expensive rental market.
