New record? Budapest police officers detained man with more than 130 active warrants

Police officers in Budapest were left stunned after discovering that a man they stopped had an extraordinary number of outstanding warrants against him.
The incident took place during the night of 2–3 March in the city’s 18th district, when patrol officers checked a man in a car park along Üllői Road following a request from another police department.
The officers couldn’t believe their eyes
When officers ran the man’s details through the national database, it showed 131 active warrants linked to him. At first, police reportedly wondered whether the system had made a mistake, reports Telex. According to authorities, five warrants were issued simply to determine the man’s whereabouts. However, 126 cases were related to unpaid fines.

Nearly five years behind bars
The 32-year-old man had accumulated almost HUF 12 million (around EUR 30,000) in unpaid penalties. As the fines remained unpaid, courts converted them into custodial sentences. As a result, he must serve 1,822 days in prison—just under five years. Following his arrest, officers transferred him to a correctional facility to begin serving the sentence.
