Budapest to celebrate its birthday with diverse programmes, party tram, metro festival in November

A variety of programmes await revellers celebrating Budapest’s birthday, including the return of the popular Metro Festival, the relaunch of the party tram, and the opening of the city’s Christmas market in City Hall Park, according to a statement by the Mayor’s Office.

Key events include a commemoration of the unification of Buda, Pest, and Óbuda, as well as the 75th anniversary of Greater Budapest on 17 Nov, the Metro Festival, featuring performances by schools, choirs, bands, and dance groups in metro stations from 14 to 16 Nov, and the Budapest Christmas Market to be held in the City Hall Park, with an ice rink and handmade goods.
On 15 Nov, Gergely Karácsony, the city’s mayor, will present the Budapest Heroes Award to employees of city companies for their professional excellence, community engagement, and dedication.
Also, the party tram will make a return, departing from Deák Ferenc Square (registration required), with live music, dancing, and evening views of the capital.
Cultural programmes, concert
On 17 Nov, the birthday celebration of Greater Budapest will feature award ceremonies, including the Budapest Prize, Pro Urbe Budapest, and Honorary Citizen of Budapest titles in a ceremony held at the 200-year-old Hungarian Academy of Sciences.
Among the cultural highlights, members of the Budapest Festival Orchestra will perform small concerts in pubs, cafes, and bistros across Pest and Buda.
Further, the Pro Cultura Urbis Foundation is supporting projects that explore and showcase the Hungarian capital’s cultural heritage. Winners of its grants and the Pro Cultura Urbis Awards will be announced on 21 Nov.
